CSUSM vs UCSD Recap – Fall Scrimmage

Scrimmage Recap: CSUSM – 14 UCSD – 13 FOT

This past Saturday’s scrimmage between Cal State San Marcos Cougars and UCSD Tritons started out with a bang. Freshman Brandon Bowens was able to score the Cougars first goal against the Tritons. This was a pretty heavy match up for Cal State San Marcos, as they had never beaten UCSD before. With a lot of work being put into this Fall Season, the coaches expected a big showing from the Cougars. As the game went on UCSD was able to respond, but Cal State held them off most of the game by two goals. Austin Jenkins had a great performance scoring four goals and four assists in his first game with the Cougars. Dylan Perry led the team with six goals, including the game winner. Both teams put together a solid effort, which developed into a nail biting finish. With nine seconds left in the fourth quarter, Cal State was down by 1. Austin Jenkins put a finishing goal in and was able to run the clock down after the face post-goal. With the over time sudden victory rule, Dylan Perry takes a rip from the wing and puts away the game winning goal off of the first possession of Over Time.

Freshman Darius Talley had a stand out game on defense, and Andrew Castillo was impressive with 11 saves in his first year as an MCLA goalie. The Cougars are definitely looking forward to meeting up with the Tritons come Spring Time. After processing the weekend, the team knows that there is work that needs to be done, but this scrimmage proves that there is a lot of potential for the Cougars’ upcoming season.

Coach Hicks was extremely proud of how the team came out for their first game but knows that there are still a few things that need to be worked on before the season. Way to go Coug’s on the beginning to a great season!
